That extra element would come from futsal. Any honest football fan would be able to tell you that the overall technical qualities of some of the teams on show at the world cup were far from spectacular. Even Brasil failed to dazzle, the only teams that took the jogo bonito concept to heart was Argentina and teams like Ghana, Ecuador and Italy (sporadic). Argentina played some spectacular football and deserved much more than their quarter final knock out would suggest.
So where does that leave futsal you ask? Well it is clear from the many websites springing up that people want to see spectacular skills on display. They want to see dribbling, nutmegs, flicks, quick one-touch play and the ‘ball on the string’ style of play made famous by those skilful Brasilians of yesteryear. Freestylers are also very popular and emerging on places like YouTube. You just don’t get enough of this in traditional football.
When will the real 'next Maradona' emerge? From the courts of futsal I say!
